The city square is ringed with merchants selling ritual items for the next holiday. Sukkot is coming, just five days after Yom Kippur. This is the only full work day between them. The supermarket has the same items. I would hope that what the merchants have is fresher and better, but if what I've learned from American markets holds true, they may have the same suppliers. Across the street, I hear a guitarist play four slow chords repeatedly through layers of delay. I go toward the sound, but only see a loudspeaker. Gradually, I recognize the music as an instrumental by Moby, synced to an animal rights video projected by a group of teenagers on a portable screen. On the bus, the hum of the air conditioning hangs on the second note of the guitar's scale. It never resolves.
