Sweeping the floor, my broom lifts up the large cockroach that has been lying there on its back. When I first saw it, a couple of days ago, it had been waving its legs about, but I couldn't flip it upright. Now it lies still. I sweep it up, its legs tangled with the broom head. I shake it off just above the floor. It lands on its back again, but, to my surprise, its legs start moving. I brush it gently onto the dustpan, take it outside, and slide it onto the pavement. It lands on its feet. At first slowly, then at its usual speed (they're too big to be fast), it heads into the tall grass. I watch it as it disappears. Another life saved. It's a good day.
