The cashier at the supermarket may be twelve years old, at most. The customer in front of me hands her a 200 shekel note. She opens the cash drawer, squints at the bill, then wanders over to the office window with it, leaving the drawer open. "Mama, what do I do with this?" The woman behind the glass takes it from her, lifts it up to the light to make sure that it's legit, then hands her four 50s. The girl comes back, gives the customer three of the bills, makes change from the remaining one, closes the drawer, and moves on to me. The customer bags her own purchases and heads out, pausing to pet a small dog tethered by the door.
