I don't know how far away the ambulance is or where it's coming from. The hard glass storefront windows on the busy street reflect all light and sound. I back away from the curb to stay clear of whatever's coming. An electric scooter zooming up the sidewalk almost hits me from behind. Ignoring the signals, the rider crosses the street in the middle of the block. The ambulance, coming around the corner, has to dart around him. The scooter rider gestures and yells. Clearly, the ambulance's business was less important that what had absorbed his attention on his earbuds and his phone.
