My alarm awakens me late in the afternoon. I dress and walk three blocks north to visit family at the House of a Hundred Grandmothers. We eat a varied meal, supper for them, breakfast for me. Afterward, I read aloud from Apartment for Rent, a beloved children's book. They help me with the unfamiliar words: nail, hallway, ceiling; squirrel, rabbit, ant. When night falls, I join them in the prayers for the end of the Sabbath then briefly go back home. Heading out to work again soon after, I call my mother on the phone. We speak of events and people there and here as I walk down pedestrian and vehicular streets, past the spice merchant's closed shop and the open book fair. I arrive at the bus stop just in time and hop aboard to start another week.
