The cab drivers here are good at handling wheelchairs. The city has a large elderly population, so they need to know how to do it. I'm not that skilled, though, at getting someone who uses a wheelchair out of a cab at a curb, especially when we're juggling a portable oxygen unit. Fortunately, the person waiting for the cab we're getting out of works at the House of a Hundred Grandmothers. While I take the wheelchair from the driver, now that he's deftly gotten it from the trunk and put the pieces back together, she handles much of the rest of the process. I get tangled up, though, when trying to back the chair away from the cab. We hit a small stanchion and get stuck. The worker sees this and directs the maneuver so that we can get clear. With a cheerful "Shabbat shalom," she hops into the cab as we head into the mall.
