The waiting room seems suspended in time. Mottled beige stone tiles on the walls and floor rest at odd angles against bright orange backgrounds. People in blue tunics with yellow piping and matching yellow pajama pants listen patiently for their calls to surgery. In the distance, a group of women moves along an unseen hallway clapping and singing. Once-modern sculptures on plinths around the room trigger memories of the original Star Trek. Downstairs, in the outdoor cafe, men in yarmulkes and women in full headscarves eat sandwiches and salads. Overhead, the sound system plays an EDM remix of Johnny Cash singing "Personal Jesus." Someone's multicultural bingo card has just been filled.
