My white baseball cap is now scruffy and stained. Walking to work late at night, I think about whether and how I should clean it. As usual, I flip through the Give-and-Take box on the way. I find a pristine new hat in there, white with the bright blue logo of the city's celebration of Jerusalem Day. I stuff it in my pocket. although I don't know if or when I will need it. As I wait for the bus home in the morning, I feel the first drops of rain since spring. (Rosh Hashanah is coming, and with it the autumn rains.) I pull the hat from my pocket and put it on, just in time.
