All the cats are out tonight. I see three in my yard before I reach the gate, three more on a doorstep on the pedestrian street, and five, joined by a sixth as I watch, nibbling at kibble that someone has carefully strewn on a curb. Several more pass me on their nightly patrols. Two face each other in front of colorful trash cans, howling in rhythmic unison. Many more dogs than usual are out walking with their humans. Everyone but me is wearing shorts and light shirts. I'm wearing khaki pants and long sleeves, since the thermostat in my office is usually set to "Siberia." The tables outside the ice cream shops are busy. I think of stopping at one myself, but I see my bus in the distance. Duty calls.
