The roar of a motorcycle cuts through the songs of dawn birds as it rolls down a pedestrian-only street. Its rider tosses newspapers over stone walls into quiet yards. Workers resting from building a house look up from a makeshift table. An urn on a battery-powered hotplate boils their Turkish coffee. On this first business day after Passover, shoppers crowd a bakery nearby. They grab fresh bread off the rack as quickly as the loaves are set out. One man emerges, munching a roll, and frees his scruffy dog's leash from a pole. A chihuahua and a bulldog, sitting calmly off leash in shadows, rise and follow them home.
